![]() Edit : Updated WABetaInfo links for Android to iPhone migration development My pre-ordered iPhone 13 is still unboxed because of all this mess and not sure how long I'm willing to hold out for a silver lining. So here we are, no real positive end or solution but hopefully somewhat wiser about the current state. There is an open issue regarding media file migration here: and a recent update by another developer who managed to get media files working (WIP) can be seen in a comment here: Messages from contacts that changed ids (phone numbers) are not linked Media files and shared locations are not imported (got placeholders instead) The one that seems to have the most traction is open source and available here: There is no complete and fully functional solution. If you have used any of the paid solutions and are able to comment/agree/disagree on any of my points above then please do, I and hopefully others would love to know your experience and how you deem the service to be trustworthy. I don't have personal experience but have read that if it does work, it's not the easiest process. The process is usually not straight forward. Maybe I'm being a bit harsh here and not really relevant to the issue but I see these as a red flag. It's not difficult to find that out with some MITM sniffing but I would be willing to bet that majority of the people that have used these solutions either don't know or worryingly, don't care.Īggressive marketing, fake/paid reviews, pointless articles and all the other dirty tactics that seem to be associated with these services. I guess this is a technical requirement for key/purchase verification and to download different versions of WhatsApp but who knows what data actually leaves your system. They all seem to require an internet connection. I have read the privacy policy for some and there are mentions of sharing anonymised data and stats about your usage during the process, which I don't entirely agree with, specially when it's default opt-in and no option to opt-out. I don't know for sure if they are doing anything sketchy in the background but my gut feeling is, if I don't know then why take the risk. ![]() I don't get how people are blindly installing these on their devices and just assume everything is swell. ![]() The solutions are closed source so it becomes difficult to audit/trust. How well do they clean up? What do they leave behind? Do they leave my phone in a vulnerable state? They require special/development access to the device which could/should be a cause for concern. So you either get lucky or get something that worked for someone else but doesn't work for you and end up having to chase refunds. People report varying degrees of success. There is no one solution that works 100% of the time. However, I do have issues with the following: Although you would expect a feature like this to be free and provided by WhatsApp, I have no issue paying a small fee to get the job done. There appears to be a some paid solutions and they are all based more or less on using an older version of WhatsApp by exploiting a bug/loophole that allows the data to be extracted and transferred. WhatsApp is apparently working on an official feature and have been for a long time but there is of course no timelines in sight: and Īlthough out of context for this post, I've listed official solutions for transferring from iPhone to Android:įor a while you could only transfer to Samsung Devices: Īs of you can now transfer from iPhone to any Android 12 device: However, I'm not entirely sure if the backup encryption is specific to the platform, if so then we would have the same issue as currently. Basically everything is encrypted on the device before sent to the platform specific storage service. The FB article links you to a white paper that outlines the high level process. I don't see this option on my WhatsApp and I think this is not fully rolled out yet? I would like to think that if the backup is E2E encrypted then having access to the key means that it doesn't matter where the backup is stored, you should still be able to decrypt the backup on any device. I got hopeful after hearing about their End-to-End Encrypted Backups feature (here and ). The main issue is due to the storage mechanism (Google Drive vs iCloud) and encryption used for the backups, which causes the incompatibility between the two platforms. Unfortunately, there are no official solutions to go from Android to iPhone. The following is a summary of what I have found and hopefully outlines the current state (as of ). It's obvious that there is no easy way to move your WhatsApp data from Android to iPhone. Over the past few weeks I have been reading countless posts and articles about the trials and tribulations of this process.
